Is it time for cataract surgery?
Cataract is the gradual clouding of the eye’s natural lens. It is the most common reason for blurred vision after 50, and the only effective treatment is surgery. You may need an assessment if you notice:
- Blurred or foggy vision that new glasses don’t fix
- Glare or haloes around lights, especially while driving at night
- Colours looking faded or yellowish
- Frequent changes in your spectacle number
- Difficulty reading, watching TV or recognising faces
There’s no need to wait for a cataract to “ripen”. The right time is when blurred vision starts affecting your daily life. A detailed eye examination will tell you whether surgery is needed now or can wait.

How cataract surgery is done at Deevine
We use phacoemulsification (micro-incision cataract surgery), the standard modern technique:
- Numbing drops: no injection is needed for most patients, and you stay awake and comfortable.
- A tiny incision of about 2–3 mm is made at the edge of the cornea.
- The cloudy lens is gently broken up and removed using ultrasound.
- A new artificial lens (IOL) is folded in, where it stays permanently.
- The incision usually seals by itself, without stitches.
The surgery itself takes about 15–20 minutes per eye. Most patients go home the same day, a few hours after surgery.

Is cataract surgery safe?
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and well-studied operations in medicine, and the large majority of patients see clearly afterwards. As with any surgery, there are risks, including infection, inflammation, raised eye pressure and, later, clouding behind the lens (posterior capsule opacification, which is treated with a quick YAG laser). Dr. Shah will explain your individual risk, especially if you have diabetes, glaucoma or a retinal condition, before you decide.
Choosing your lens: the decision that matters most
The lens placed in your eye decides how you’ll see for the rest of your life. Dr. Shah explains each option at your consultation, based on your eye measurements, lifestyle and budget.
- Monofocal (standard): clear vision at one distance, usually far. Suits patients happy to use reading glasses.
- Monofocal plus / EDOF (e.g. Tecnis Eyhance, Hoya Vivinex): sharp distance with better intermediate vision for the computer or cooking. Suits active patients who want fewer glasses; usually needed only for fine print.
- Toric: corrects astigmatism (cylindrical number) as well as cataract. Suits patients with significant cylinder in their glasses.
- Multifocal / trifocal (e.g. Tecnis PureSee, Rayner Galaxy): distance, intermediate and near vision. Suits patients who want to be largely spectacle-free.

Before and after your surgery
Before: A detailed eye examination, A-scan or optical biometry to calculate your lens power, OCT if needed, and a review of your blood sugar and blood pressure. Continue your regular medicines unless the doctor tells you otherwise.
On the day: Plan to spend 3–4 hours at the clinic. Come with a family member, eat a light meal, and avoid eye make-up.
After:
- Use the prescribed eye drops for about 6 weeks
- No eye patch or bandage is needed for most patients; if eye protection is advised for you, Dr. Shah will explain how to use it
- Avoid splashing water in the eye, rubbing it and dusty places for 2 weeks; avoid swimming and eye make-up for 4 weeks, and heavy lifting for 3–4 weeks
- Most people resume reading, TV and light household work within a few days
- Regular follow-up visits for 4–6 weeks after surgery
Vision usually improves within a few days. If you need glasses, the final prescription is given at 4–6 weeks.
What to expect in the first few days
Some symptoms are common after cataract surgery and are part of normal healing:
- Mild discomfort or a gritty, foreign-body sensation
- A feeling of heaviness in the eye
- Watering
- Slight redness
- Mildly blurred vision or glare from lights
These usually settle within a few days and continue to improve over the following weeks.

Your consultation includes a vision test, an eye pressure check, a dilated examination of the lens and retina, and lens measurements if surgery is needed. Plan for about an hour, bring your current glasses and any previous eye reports, and come with someone, as your eyes may be dilated.
Can both eyes be operated together?
Yes, if required. Both eyes can be operated on the same day for suitable patients, for example those who find it difficult to travel twice. Usually, though, we operate one eye at a time, with the second eye done a few days to 1–2 weeks later, once the first eye has settled. Dr. Shah will advise what is best for you.
Can cataract come back after surgery?

I have diabetes. Can I have cataract surgery?
Yes, once your blood sugar is under control. We check your retina carefully before and after surgery, because diabetes can affect it.
