We are referring to orbital fractures here. The human eyes are safeguarded within a box-like bony structure called the orbit. Trauma to the head and skull, whether from a fall, injury, or road traffic accident, can result in an orbital wall fracture and oculoplastic surgeons are the best to handle such cases.
Injuries to the skull may involve multiple trauma to the jaw, orbit, and nose, necessitating a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. Injuries to the eye socket can have devastating effects such visual problems, squinting, double vision or cosmetic disfigurement like sunken eyes or misalignment. Our skilled oculoplastic surgeons, led by Dr. Devanshi Shah at Deevine Eye Care & Multispeciality Centre, excel in handling such cases.
Proper Evaluation is the Key –
A thorough evaluation of vision, eye movements, and associated injuries is crucial. Your doctor will inquire about symptoms such as double vision or blurring and assess their severity. Diagnostic imaging, such as a CT scan, aids in diagnosis and treatment planning.
Treatment for orbital fractures:
Not all fractures require surgery. Some minor fractures may be managed conservatively with supportive medical treatment and observed without any surgery. However, for large or significant fractures, surgery is often necessary to prevent future complications. Ideally, the operation should take place between 10 to 20 days after the injury. Your oculoplastic surgeon will guide you when to get operated and whether any implants are required for the fracture repair. Each patient and injury is unique.
Oculoplastic surgeons are trained experts in hidden scars and will give you best cosmetic results.
Transconjunctival approach has many advantages over eyelid skin approach. Using a transconjunctival incision on the inside of the eyelid provides advantages in terms of faster recovery and improved cosmesis. The damage to the bones of the orbit will be evaluated later The surgeon will remove loose or fragmented bone fragments, evaluate orbit bone damage, and may use implants for support. In order to give support while fixing the fracture, an implant may be required in some cases. Various implants are available, bone, titanium mesh, porous polyethylene, hybrid etc. Sometimes the ocular muscles get impacted in the injury side which will be released back to normal during the surgery.
Post Op Recovery:
Overnight hospitalization is typically required after surgery. The recovery period ranges from 2 to 6 weeks (variable). Anti-inflammatory and antibiotic coverage, along with prescribed eye drops and ointments, will be provided upon discharge.
